What If I Have Too Many Learning Objectives?

(Note: In the last blog post I addressed the issue of testing when there are no learning objectives. Today we address the issue of testing when there are too many learning objectives.)

Question: My Learning System has hundreds of Learning Objectives. I can’t give a five hundred question test!

Answer: That’s true. Generally, learning systems are composed of modules and the modules are further divided into lessons (or sections) and each lesson has its own set of learning objectives. So, on the lesson (formative) tests you can test on each learning objective. Then, on the final (summative) exam, test only on the critical (you need to make this determination) learning objectives. In practice, exams should be no longer than an hour.
